Hello everyone! Back in December 2018, I wrote the post this one is based off of, explaining how to read The Shadowhunter Chronicles by Cassandra Clare. This is an amazing series, full of fascinating world-building and unforgettable characters. However, if you have never read them before, it is a bit daunting and can be confusing figuring out where to start. While all of the books are in the same world, they are broken down into several different series, all of which build off of each other.

Since my last post, there have been some more books added to the series, so I thought I would post an updated list. I also just finished reading the most recent addition to the world, Chain of Gold, so I will be giving you a mini review of that book (as well as a suggestion on what to read before it, if you are only interested in reading the newest book).

How to Read the Shadowhunter Chronicles

According to Cassandra Clare, it is best to read the books in publication order, so I will be listing each of the books in publication order here for your ease 🙂

 

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments #1)

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Speaking of Chain of Gold…

Chain of Gold: Mini-Review

I just finished reading Chain of Gold a few days ago, and it was fantastic!! I love the Edwardian period (the early 1900’s), so getting to see the Shadowhunters navigate this more restricted and refined society was really entertaining. I loved the world and the characters so much!

Cordelia Carstairs was such a great new heroine to add to the series. I love that she was such an incredible warrior, while still retaining her Edwardian femininity. Also, the fact that she is half Persian was such a great representation of a culture that we hadn’t yet seen in the Shadowhunter world until now. Her romance with James Herondale made me at once swoon and cry. I cannot wait to see where their relationship goes in the next two books in the series.

I am also a huge fan of Lucie Herondale and Anna Lightwood. Strong females always make me happy, so these two made me smile throughout the book. The boys were great as well, but I loved the female contingent of this book so much!

The story and trials of this book were so engaging, and I cannot wait to see where it all leads! The next book won’t be out for another year, and it is just too long to wait!!

I gave this book 5 Stars, and I would give it more if I could! 

~If you are interested in reading this book, but not the entire universe – I would say definitely read The Infernal Devices trilogy (as it is about the parents of all of the characters in this book). I would also suggest reading Ghosts of the Shadow Market, as several of the stories are about the characters in this book, and gives some backstory that will make certain parts of Chain of Gold far less confusing.
